Self Assessment for CRR Histology
Two distinct self-assessment resources are available for CRR histology.
1. Self Assessment Questions are available on-line (links below). These are multiple-choice questions, mostly vocabulary review.
SAQ, Introduction -- microscopy, cells, basic tissue types, blood cells.
SAQ, Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems.
SAQ, Respiratory System.
SAQ, Renal System.2. Self-assessment slides are available for check-out in the Medical Resource Center. These are unlabelled microscope slides for identification, study, and interpretation.
Nine unlabelled slides represent autopsy specimens from the Pathology Department in Springfield.
(This is a limited resource, so please check out the slides only for as long as you are actually using them. Twelve identical sets are available.)
EVALUATION: Any of the self-assessment slides may appear on the CRR End-of-Unit Evaluation.
For each self-assessment slide:
- Describe the basic tissue elements which appear on the slide; and ...
- Insofar as possible, identify the source for the specimen (i.e., what part of the body is represented on the slide?).
- Hints are available on line.
- You are expected to work together.
- Once you have identified the source for each specimen, study it further as a representative sample of that organ. Several of the SAQ slides present some features better than the slides in your reference set.
Most of these specimens are nominally "normal", although certain areas may display unfamiliar appearance due to post-mortem change, less-than-ideal fixation, or other causes. None are patently pathological. Each slide includes at least one distinctive clue (sometimes small and obscure) which enables recognition of the source.
Read this page before beginning this self-assessment exercise.
DO NOT open these hints until you have first examined the slides. Otherwise you will spoil the fun and thwart the purpose of the exercise.
