The posterior pituitary consists of secretory terminals of axons from neurons in the hypothalamus. These terminals secrete oxytocin and vasopressin.
The numerous nuclei in this image are mostly pituicytes (glial cells). Axons and glial cytoplasm comprise the pink fibrous substance. Vascular channels are plentiful but inconspicuous.
