Cardiac muscle

This specimen of cardiac musclehas been stained to highlight intercalated disks.  Intercalated discs can be readily seen only in regions where the muscle fiber have been cut longitudinally. 
(Muscle striations should be visible at this magnification, but in this digital image they are obscured by pixellation.)
