Axon reaction, image by Ramón y Cajal
Image from Ramón y Cajal's Histologie du systeme nerveux de l'homme et des vertebres, showing the "axon reaction" after nerve section [accessed at the Wellcome Collection].
Cajal's caption reads, approximately, "Two motor cells of the anterior horn of the rabbit spinal cord, whose sciatic nerve had been severed a fortnight before, stained by the Nissl method. A, Cell whose chromatic clusters [Nissl bodies] are disaggregated and whose nucleus is lateralized; B, Cell in more advanced chromatolysis."
