A portion of one corpus luteum is shown in this image. The corpus luteum forms by reoganization of granulosa and theca cells following ovulation.
At the end of the monthly cycle, or after the first trimester of pregnancy, the corpus luteum gradually degenerates (involutes) into a fibrous scar called a corpus albicans.
