Ovary, Corpus Luteum

Notes

The corpus luteum consists of cells which are specialized for manufacture and synthesis of steroids (progesterone).  The corpus luteum forms by reoganization of granulosa and theca cells following ovulation.

At the end of the monthly cycle, or at the end of pregnancy, the corpus luteum degenerates into a fibrous scar called a corpus albicans.
