Note these features of the renal medulla, in contrast with the renal cortex.
- No renal corpuscles are present.
- All tubules are approximately parallel.
- In this specimen, most tubules are cut in cross section, indicating that they are arranged perpendicular to the plane of section.
- Compare with a different plane of section.

The larger tubules in this image are collecting ducts. The smaller tubules are loops of Henle. Click on the thumbnail at left for higher magnification.
