The mucosa of the vagina consists of stratified squamous epithelium (top of left image) overlying highly vascular fibromuscular tissue in which bundles of smooth muscle (blue arrow) are interwoven with fibrous connective tissue.
Distinguishing smooth muscle from collagen is facilitated by trichrome stain, as shown here, with collagen stained blue and smooth muscle stained red.
