The bulk of the tongue consists of striated muscle fibers arranged in bundles along three mutually perpendicular axes, so any plane of section is likely to reveal fibers cut both transversely and longitudinally.
In this low-magnification view, the fibers clearly show a repeating pattern with two distinctly different orientations. Within the layers that appear more-or-less cross sectioned are bundles which slant through the plane of section in opposite directions (i.e., near right toward far left, vs. near left toward far right).
